The Game Trade Pivot

Gambar
When a game hits peak popularity, it's not uncommon for it to be taken away from independent retailers in some form or another. It might be a retailer exclusive, or a publisher's attempt to spread the wealth (and power). If Target came to you after publishing a hot board game and offered you a bazillion dollars for an exclusive to the expansion, what would you say? It might kill your company, but you would have a bazillion dollars. This morning I had two examples of pivot math, in which I needed to adjust expectations based on publisher removal of market demand. One is for Wizards of the Coast and the other for Ravensburger: How many should I buy? Saltmarsh : 30 days of Tomb of Annihilation sales (because those are my terms), with a 10% bump for growth, with this total divided in half because of removal of early release (it will be sold on Amazon the same day by idiot retailers).  I suspect Amazon gets half the D&D market.  Villainous Expansion : Total sales of Villainous ...

10 Best Open Source RPGs (Role-Playing Games)

Gambar
Top ten RPGs - I made a video of this. People who love text so much they would marry it, will be delighted to see this concise side-product of that video. A list of sorts. With thoughts that came to me after the fact. Especially nagging thoughts. The bestness of films is determined by their profitability. Which one can claim allows concluding the quality of the product. Maybe the marketing is part of that product. Whatever the case, none of this is applicable to the underground niche pro-tip specialized target audience-seeking open source games, where using the word choice "open source" is valid enough to stop writing and discuss philosophy. Thereby I declare that " best " means " complete-ish, playable, fun " which is 33%-66% objective. I present to you - in order of " not like in the video " - the best eleven minus one* RPGs that ever existed yet. RPG platforming is still a concept to get used to but for some reason It works well. As for...

Gaming At A Distance

Gambar
After my rather bleak  post the other day, I thought today I'd suggest something for virtual roleplaying. Obviously, gaming online is going to be easier than face-to-face, what with the Coronavirus pandemic.  And it just so happens that I created the perfect rules-light, minimalist D&D hack.  The latest version of  Crimson Dragon Slayer D20 Revised  was uploaded a few weeks ago. It's both old school and 5e compatible, plug and play arcade-mode for those quick and dirty pick-up games on Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, Discord, or wherever you guys are playing these days. Send your players a link ahead of the game and they can read it all in less than 15 minutes, and make a PC in under 5.  It's absolutely FREE, so why not grab it, use it, share it? Enjoy, VS p.s.  I'm currently taking order reservations for luxurious  Cha'alt hardcovers.  Wisconsin has been officially locked down (non-essential travel verboten).  But when the self-quarantin...

Sunsetting The Sunblitz Brotherhood

Gambar
I got the decals on the Sunblitz Brotherhood this week, and finished up the pennants as well. I'm not completely happy with them but my motivation to keep working on them is gone, so they're done. I hope to get them dullcoted and tufted this weekend, then it's on to the Falcon turrets.

Busy Day!

Gambar
What's going on everyone!? Today makes 4 days before we have to be out of our old home and in our first ever house that we will own! This meant a LOT of moving today and even more tomorrow as our goal is to be out and sleeping in our new home by tomorrow night! So with all of this in mind, please understand the reasons for me repeatedly playing all these app games. I will get to physical games as soon as I am able but currently our new house is so small that we can't even fit a kitchen table in there, lol. Today for the #2019gameaday challenge I played another game of Zombie in my pocket and ALMOST walked away with a win but at the last second I ran out of time and all was lost. It really is a fun game and I love that its just as easy to win as it is to lose! As always, thank you for reading and don't forget to stop and smell the meeples!  :) -Tim

A Note On "Standard" Player Powers

In a few recent TMG games I've worked on ( Harvest , Pioneer Days , and Old West Empresario ) I thought a lot about how to do player powers in the game. In Harvest, the "standard" side of each player board (recommended for first time players) is Wil Plantsomdil, who starts with a basic spread of resources, and gets a big VP bonus at game end. The intent was to allow a new player to play in a game with experienced players, not have to wrestle with a player power while also learning the game, and still get a competitive score. In that game, I wouldn't blame "experienced games" for skipping Wil Plantsomdil and going straight for the "real" player powers. However, I thought we could do better... In  Pioneer Days  and  Old West Empresario , the Standard Pioneer / Standard Empresario abilities are not just a dumbed down power meant for newbie players. Rather we took one of the more well-rounded or straightforward of the powers we were developing, one wh...

River City Girls Review (PS4)

Gambar
Written by Anthony L. Cuaycong Title : River City Girls Developer : WayForward Publisher : WayForward Genre : Adventure, Arcade, Fighting, Multiplayer Price : $29.99 Also Available On : Switch , Steam , XB1 When Nekketsu koha Kunio-kun (roughly translated as "Hot Blood Tough Guy Kunio") made its way to arcades in 1986, not even its biggest fans thought it would have legs. Even as developer Technos Japan had high hopes for it (going so far as to name its principal protagonist after company president Kunio Taki), it seemed to carry a one-off vibe. After all, it was a side-scrolling beat-em-'up that, for the first time, employed four-direction movement and required multiple hits to dispatch enemies. It turned out to be a commercial smash, prompting the release of a port to the Nintendo Family Computer the next year and serving as the kickoff point of an immensely popular franchise. That the Kunio-kun series is still alive and kicking three decades and three years later desp...

Wooden Jigsaw Puzzles: A Comparison (Monday Musings 80)

Gambar
I've decided to write as many posts as possible, and titling it Monday Musings from now on, to insure that I don't "fall behind" lol. As another hobby to consider (to give your eyes much needed rest from all the blue light of video games) is jigsaw puzzles. I got into puzzles once again as my friend introduced me to the Wentworth wooden puzzles. I was so impressed with these puzzles because of the quality and the satisfying tactile feel when you put the pieces together, that I wanted to order some myself. Upon visiting Wentworth's online site, my heart sank as the puzzles were rather pricey, though at $50 for a 250-piece puzzle, the cost/time is actually reasonable, as long as you do the puzzle a couple of times. Since I'm very slow, it takes about 2 hours, so if you do the puzzle 2 or 3 times, it's cheaper than going to the movies. So I thought of getting one, but then the shipping charges were astronomical, since it's shipping from the UK. However, I...

Let's Keep An Eye Out For Cytopia

Gambar
With city builder games climbing back into popularity, it was about time for a serious libre project to tackle the genre once again. After many years of abandoned efforts, it is now the turn of Cytopia to try to scratch that itch. The project had its inception in 2018, when now lead developer JimmySnails announced in a forum post the intention of creating an engine that could replicate most of the functionalities of the classic SimCity 2000, a game still near and dear to many players up to this day. Ever since then, Cytopia evolved into what appears to a fully-fledged independent game-in-progress, with its own graphics, features, and even an editor planned down the line. Aside from the obvious SimCity 2000 influences, the game also appears to draw inspiration from the recently released TheoTown, with main graphics artist KingTut101 crafting assets in a very similar style. Whether Cytopia will deliver where others have failed remains to be seen, but as usual we encourage you to downlo...
